Destination Nepal
Noted
for its Majestic Himalayas, Nepal is a country
of highly diverse and rich geography, culture and religions. It
is sandwiched between the Tibetan plateau and the plains of subcontinent
of China and India with an area of 147,181 square kilometers. For
a small country, Nepal has great physical diversity, ranging from
the Tarai Plain, the northern rim of the Gangetic Plain situated
at about 300 meters above sea level in the south and to the almost
8,800-meter-high Mount Everest in the north.
Nepal commonly is divided into three broad physiographic areas:
the Mountain Region, the Hill Region, and the Tarai Region. All
three parallel each other, from east to west, as continuous ecological
belts, occasionally bisected by the country's river systems.
Nepal has a total population of 23 million (2001 census) and it
comprises of three major ethnic groups in terms of their origin:
Indo-Nepalese, Tibeto-Nepalese, and indigenous Nepalese. The first
group, comprising those of Indo- Nepalese origin, inhabited the
more fertile lower hills, river valleys, and Tarai plains. The second
major group consisted of communities of Tibeto-Mongol origin occupying
the higher hills from the west to the east. The third and much smaller
group comprised a number of tribal communities, such as the Tharus
and the Dhimals of the Tarai.
Religion is an indispensable part of the culture of Nepal and therefore
Nepal was constitutional declared Hindu state in the world. However,
there was a great deal of intermingling of Hindu and Buddhist beliefs.
The fact that Hindu worshipped at Buddhist temples and Buddhist
worshipped at Hindu temples has been one of the principal reasons
adherents of the two dominant groups in Nepal have never engaged
in any overt religious conflicts.
The major tourist attractions in Nepal are Mount Everest, Pashupatinath
temple, Royal Chitwan, Changu Narayan, Annapurna Range, Hanuman
Dhoka, Golden gate, Bhaktapur Durbar Square, Kathmandu Durbar Square,
Lumbini (birth place of Buddha), Buddhanath Stupa and Swayambhunath.
Lumbini (Sanskrit for "the lovely") is a Buddhist pilgrimage
site located at the Nepalese town of Kapilavastu, district Rupandehi,
near the Indian border. Lumbini is the traditional birthplace of
Gautama Buddha, the founder of Buddhism, who was born in the 7th
or 6th century BC. Lumbini was designated a UNESCO World Heritage
Site in 1997.

| Forbidden Kingdom of Mustang Trek |
Trek |
Forbidden to the outside world until 1992, the tiny kingdom of Mustang preserved within its boundaries a culture and a way of life little changed over the centuries. Still presided over by its hereditary dynasty, this unique kingdom-within-a-kingdom has Tibetan Buddhist monasteries that predate any monasteries within Tibet, and a well-preserved Tibetan Buddhism that has thrived with little influence from the Chinese to their north or the Nepalis to their south. In fact, it is said by many that there is more of Tibet in Mustang than there is in today's Tibet. On top of all this, the trekking here is fabulous, and only moderate in its difficulty.
The trip begins with a flight to Pokhara, and a connecting flight to Jomsom, the latter taking us through the spectacular Kali Gandaki River gorge. As we enter Kagbeni & into proper Mustang, we enter into Tibet’s desert landscape, people, culture, architecture & language. The gorge above Tsaili is dramatic, with the wide cliffside trail snaking its way upward in the cool morning shade. Once atop the gorge, we cross the first of many passes, affording us our first wide-angle panorama of this incredible landscape: high altitude steppe on all sides, gnarly mountains east and west, the imposing Annapurna massif to our south, and the vast expanse of Tibet luring us northward.
There are monasteries to visit each day, with Gemi, Lo Gyekar, and Tsarang & Luri Gompa & the ultimate prize destination of LO Manthang.
Highlight of our trip is the opportunity to observe the annual Tiji festival – a highly interesting & colourful mask dance performance & prayer ceremony by the monks held at the palace ground as well as at the monastery. Locals from far & wide as well as foreign trekkers flock to Lo Manthang during this festival period. It is truly an unforgettable & indeed once-in-a-lifetime experience to be able to observe & participate in this festival at this remote corner of the world. |
