Destination Tibet

A trip to Tibet will be a life time experience to witness all together a flabbergasting landscape, a distinct people and an ancient culture & religious tradition. Tibet (Ch: Xi Zang), which is known as the “Roof the World”, has average height of the whole region more than 4,000 meters above sea level and covers an area of 2.5 millions square kilometers. The highest mountain in the world “Mt. Everest”, which is 8,846.27 meters above sea level, is located in the Himalayas at the south of Tibet bordering to India, Nepal and Bhutan. The formation of the Himalayas and the rising of the Tibetan plateau are extremely recent events. Its mountains originated less than four million years ago are among the youngest mountains in the world.

Geographically, Tibet can be divided into three major divisions, the east, north and south. The eastern part is densely covered with lush rainforests. Some areas are now converted into agricultural fields mostly planted with wheat, barley and millet. During winter, the region can be extremely cold but surprisingly dry.

The northwest part of the country has a few open grasslands and is mostly covered by vast deserts. Despite its huge land area, only a few people live here. The water that is consumed by inhabitants usually comes from the mountains and rivers. The southern part is considered more of an agricultural and cultural center of Tibet. Most of the towns and counties are situated in this area.

The atmosphere of Tibet is brutally dry for about nine months of the whole year. Some western routes get only a scant amount of snow each year but still remain passable. The geography of Tibet can be quite fascinating and yet only a few areas can be inhabited. For many decades, Tibet was virtually isolated from the rest of the world.

Only recently a railway connecting China and Tibet became fully operational. Throughout the entire trip, tourists will be able to view breathtaking sceneries and amazing landscapes. The railway would also lessen the transportation costs of basic commodities and also bring in more tourists in the country. Indeed, there are a lot of natural wonders in Tibet that tourists can feast their eyes on. The captivating geography of Tibet and its rich heritage would surely attract people from halfway around the world

Tibet has major sources of many rivers, namely, Yarlung Tsangpo (Brahmaputra in India), Machu (Yellow River in China), Drichu (Yangtse in China), Senge Khabab (Indus in India), Phungchu (Arun in India), Gyalmo Ngulchu (Salween in Burma) and Zachu (Mekong in Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos).

Native wildlife in Tibet includes Tibetan antelope, wild yak, wild ass, Tibetan argali and blue sheep.

Being predominantly a Buddhist populated region for many centuries, it offers tourists a glimpse of the evolution of Tibetan Buddhism through the relics of ancient Buddhist monasteries and temples in holy cities of Lhasa, Shigatse, Gyantse and Tsethang. Local people speak Tibetan, Chinese and some English in tourist areas. Tourists will also have opportunity to witness various traditional Tibetan festivals celebrated almost throughout the year in Tibet. Visitors could also have their favorite sports like biking, trekking, white water rafting, etc possible on the highest plateau on the world.
